Why do we need to know how many words or characters are in your original document?

We need to know how many words or characters (see below) your original document contains as this is one of the most important factors in working out how much your translation will cost.

What do you mean by "words or characters"?

Translation assignments for western languages are calculated based upon the number of words in the original document. Some languages, especially those from the Asia Pacific region (e.g. Japanese) do not use words, rather they use characters and hence we base our quote on the number of characters in the source document.

How can I tell how many words or characters my document contains?

If your document is in Microsoft Word format, you can find out how many words your document contains very easily. Simply go to the "File" menu and select the "Properties" option and check the "Statistics" tab. Word automatically counts the words as shown in the example below. A word of caution though, Microsoft Word DOES NOT count words which are contained within text boxes or graphics. We have special tools which do so and will be happy to analyse your document for you.
